Solid State Chemistry
Solid State Chemistry is designed to treat those aspects of chemistry which are of particular
importance to engineers. Specifically, what happens when collections of atoms and molecules come
together to form solids. This course forms the bases between atomic and molecular concepts and
structures. Fundamental principles of the chemistry of condensed states of matter including metals,
polymers, molecular solids and ceramics. Topics include crystal structures, solids, lattice energy,
semi-conductors, insulators, band theory, bonding, x-ray diffraction, electron density and diffraction,
spectroscopy, electric, optic, and magnetic properties.
